A Florida Teacher Speaks Out

LETTER BY A FLORIDA TEACHER

This is a Subject close to my heart. Do you know that we have Adult students at the school where I teach who are NOT U.S. Citizens and who get the PELL Grant, which is a federal grant (no Payback required) plus other federal grants to go to school?

One student from the Dominican Republic Told me that she didn’t want me to find a job for her after she finished my program, because she was getting housing from our housing department and she was getting a PELL Grant which paid for her total Tuition and books, plus money left over.

She was looking into WAIT which gives students a CREDIT CARD (more…)

Unelected Governments

Editorial in the Las Cruces Sun-News on Thursday, March 22, 2012

We are in a world of shifting political and social concepts and institutions. Hilary Clinton told us that it “takes a village” and we are all part of that village. The current conceptual term for this “village” is “Communitarianism”. Its generally accepted definition is that it is a political and social philosophy that emphasizes the rights of the “community common good” above those of the individual. Others would say it is the balancing of the rights of the individual against those of the community and “civil society”. I contend communitarianism subordinates the rights of the individual to the collective community. Communitarianism is also the current politically correct term for socialism. Many of its social programs are implemented through unelected “councils”.

There is a growing trend across America in all levels of government to turn control over to unelected councils, commissions or organizations. The road to socialism is littered (more…)

The Right to Sit at a Desk

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom.

When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.

‘Ms. Cothren, where’re our desks?’

She replied, ‘You can’t have a desk until you tell me (more…)

So How Come Missouri Has NO ILLEGALS?

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Read the answer. Isn’t it funny how simple answers are available for just about everything… Missouri has no illegals, go figure… Missouri’s approach to the problem of illegal immigration appears to be more advanced, sophisticated, strict and effective than anything to date in Arizona. Do the loonies in San Francisco, or the White House, appreciate what Missouri has done? When are our fearless President and his dynamic Attorney General going to take action to require Missouri start accepting illegal immigrants once again?

So, why doesn’t Missouri receive attention? Answer: There are no Mexican illegals in Missouri to demonstrate. The “Show Me” state has once again shown us how it should be done. There needs to be more publicity and exposure regarding what Missouri has done.

In 2007, Missouri placed on the ballot a proposed constitutional amendment designating English as the official language of Missouri. In November, 2008, nearly 90% voted in favor! Thus, English became the official language for ALL governmental activity in Missouri . No individual has the right to demand government services in a language OTHER than English.

In 2008, a measure was passed that required the Missouri Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officials to verify the immigration status of any person arrested, and inform federal authorities if the person is found to be in Missouri illegally. Missouri law enforcement officers receive specific training with respect to enforcement of federal immigration laws.

In Missouri, illegal immigrants do NOT have access to taxpayers benefits such as food stamps and health care through Missouri Health NET. In 2009, a measure was passed that ensures Missouri ‘s public institutions of higher education do NOT award financial aid to individuals who are illegally in the United States. In Missouri, all post-secondary institutions of higher education are required to annually certify to the Missouri Dept. of Higher Education that they have NOT knowingly awarded financial aid to students who are unlawfully present in the United States.

So, while Arizona has made national news for its new law, it is important to remember, Missouri has been far more proactive in addressing this horrific problem – but on a gradual basis. Missouri has made it clear that illegal immigrants are NOT welcome in the state and they will certainly NOT receive public benefits (that’s social benefits) at the expense of Missouri taxpayers.

On the Occupy Wall Street Movement

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

By Dr. Thomas Sowell

“The current Occupy Wall Street movement is the best illustration to date of what President Barack Obama’s America looks like. It is an America where the lawless, unaccomplished, ignorant and incompetent rule. It is an America where those who have sacrificed nothing pillage and destroy the lives of those who have sacrificed greatly.

“It is an America where history is rewritten to honor dictators, murderers and thieves. It is an America where violence, racism, hatred, class warfare and murder are all promoted as acceptable means of overturning the American civil society.

“It is an America where humans have been degraded (more…)

Parental Advice to OWS Protestors

MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY

Some belated parental advice to protesters.

Call it an occupational hazard, but I can’t look at the Occupy Wall Street protesters without thinking, “Who parented these people?”

As a culture columnist, I’ve commented on the social and political ramifications of the “movement” — now known as “OWS” — whose fairyland agenda can be summarized by one of their placards: “Everything for everybody.”

Thanks to their pipe-dream platform, it’s clear there are people with serious designs on “transformational” change in America who are using the protesters like bedsprings in a brothel.

Yet it’s not my role as a commentator that prompts my parenting question, but rather the fact that I’m the mother of four teens and young adults. There are some crucial life lessons that the protesters’ moms clearly have not passed along.

Here, then, are five things the OWS protesters’ mothers should have taught their children but obviously didn’t, so I will: (more…)

Years of liberal dogma have spawned a generation of amoral, uneducated, welfare dependent, brutalized youngsters

A few weeks after the U.S. city of Detroit was ravaged by 1967 race riots in which 43 people died, I was shown around the wrecked areas by a black reporter named Joe Strickland.

He said: ‘Don’t you believe all that stuff people here are giving media folk about how sorry they are about what happened. When they talk to each other, they say: “It was a great fire, man!”?’

I am sure that is what many of the young rioters, black and white, who have burned and looted in England through the past few shocking nights think today.

It was fun. It made life interesting. It got people to notice them. As a girl looter told a BBC reporter, it showed ‘the rich’ and the police that ‘we can do what we like’.

If you live a normal life of absolute futility, which we can assume most of this week’s rioters do, excitement of any kind is welcome. The people who wrecked swathes of property, (more…)

Fifty-Four Years of Math 1957 – 2011 In America

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

2. Teaching Math In 1960s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970s (more…)
