America’s Moral Compass
By William J. Dell – 20 October 2009
For more than 300 years America had a strong moral compass based and grounded in Judeo-Christian principles. These principles guided and provided strength to our Pilgrim ancestors and the other colonists that arrived on our shores beginning in 1620. These principles taught these heroic individuals to be self-reliant and independent. In this land families, usually in the form of persecuted religious groups, came together to form communities; these communities then formed States; and States formed our Nation. One hundred seventy-five years later these Judeo-Christian principles along with the teachings of John Locke, Adam Smith, Frederic Bastiat found their way into the founding documents of the greatest Republic the world has ever known.
Beginning with the Declaration of Independence our Founding Fathers began the process of codifying the principles lived by the immigrants to Colonial America. They continued this process in 1787 with the adoption of our Divinely inspired Constitution and the forming of our Constitutional Republic with its system of “checks and balances.” Still We the People wanted to ensure that we would not be ensnared by another tyrannical government. We had just spent eight years and the life blood of many patriots winning our independence from England. We wanted to protect ourselves from any form of tyranny in the form of the new federal government. Because of this the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution, were ratified on December 15, 1791. We spoke boldly and loudly. We wanted a limited federal government deriving its powers from those granted by We the People . A government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” With this addition, America created a strong, codified moral compass which would serve our Constitutional Republic well for 122 years.
Around 1900 however, forces were set in motion to destroy We the People’s self-reliance and independence. There began a concerted effort on the part of a power seeking democratic oligarchy to enslave We the People and make us dependent on the Federal Government. Their final objective, although not yet attained, is to make us “slaves” in a welfare socialist state. From 1913 until now We the People have been largely asleep and acquiesced to their slow methodical plans not recognizing the inch-by-inch encroachment of their chains of slavery. We have yawned and paid little attention during the past 100 years as social-justice program after social-justice program have destroyed the very rights for which our Founding Fathers fought and died. You say what rights? Our inalienable God given rights to life, liberty and property.
As stated above, families came together using Judeo-Christians principles to form our Nation and give it the strength to become the greatest Republic on earth. Further, as observed and reported by Alexis de Tocqueville in 1831, “I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers, and it was not there; in her fertile fields and boundless prairies; and it was not there; in her rich mines and her vast commerce, and it was not there. Not until I visited the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” (Emphasis added)
Billy Graham’s daughter was interviewed on the Early Show shortly after 9-11. Jane Clayson asked her “How could God let something like this happen?” [regarding 9-11]; Anne Graham Lotz gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, “I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government, and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?” (Emphasis added)
When our Nation enacts laws designed to destroy families, to destroy self-reliance, and to enslave We the People , how can we expect it not to affect our Nation? Our moral compass remains true but We the People have refused to look at it – to follow it – and we have wandered far off the course set by our Founding Fathers in the Constitution and Bill of Rights of this our great Constitutional Republic.
What can we learn in light of recent events – terrorists attacks, school shootings, etc? These all began after the 1960s when Madeleine Murray O’Hare complained she didn’t want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK. Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem. We said an expert should know what he’s talking about. And we said OK. Then the NEA began dumbing down the education process, eliminating teaching the principles that made us great from the curriculum to ensure that no student failed. And we were to busy to be involved in our children’s education. We thought it good to take away the freedom to fail, but we were wrong!
Now we’re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don’t know right from wrong, and why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with “WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.” And as a Nation, we have stopped “sowing” the principles upon which the nation was founded and that made us the greatest nation on earth. Because we have acquiesced and forsaken America’s Moral Compass, we have been involved in sowing the seeds of our own destruction. We the People have allowed our elected representatives to move us from our Constitutional Republic down the slippery slope to a Welfare Socialist State.
It is not enough to fill the minds of students with facts. If you do not give them a strong moral compass to guide them in the use of the knowledge obtained, you have failed to educate them. When you quit teaching the philosophy of John Locke, Adam Smith, Frederic Bastiat, and the Founding Fathers in favor of the socialist, amoral diatribe of Karl Marx, Valadimir Lenin, and Chairman Mao how can you not expect to lose the moral compass which made America great? When you quit teaching and emphasizing the Judeo-Christian principles that were the basis of those who first immigrated to America, formed its government and made her great in favor of Atheism or Secular Humanism, why should we wonder that we are losing our way?
We as a Nation must return to the God who caused this Nation to rise. We must continue to be tolerant of the micro-minority that has spoken so loud for the last century, but we must regain our moral compass and the principles that made us a great Nation. I share the opinion stated by Benjamin Franklin at the Constitutional Convention, “I have lived, Sir, a long time and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth – that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the sacred writings that ‘except the Lord build they labor in vain that build it.’ I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel”
If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, can We the People really expect our Nation to rise or remain free as the greatest Republic on earth without His aid? Do We the People really think that as a Nation we can get ahead by leaving God behind? We must return to America’s Moral Compass found in our Judeo-Christian heritage. We must return to the principles of our Founding Fathers as incorporated in the Declaration of Independence and codified in the U. S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We must once again have “pulpits aflame with righteousness” as Alexis de Tocqueville found in 1831.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and heal their land.” [II Chronicles 7:14 KJV]
May We the People , as a Nation, sing with vigor and sincerity our Centennial Hymn written in 1876 for a celebration of the Centennial Fourth of July:
God of our fathers, whose almighty hand
Leads forth in beauty all the starry band
Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies
Our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.
Thy love divine hath led us in the past,
In this free land by Thee our lot is cast,
Be Thou our Ruler, Guardian, Guide and Stay,
Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.
From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence,
Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.
Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way,
Lead us from night to never ending day;
Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
And glory, laud, and praise be ever Thine.
