Patriot Guard Riders

Amore Dei, Familiae, Patriae ducit !

I am a veteran of the Viet Nam War. In John 15:11 we read, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend.” It is hard for me to understand why the Westboro Baptist Church does what it does. A fallen warrior who guarantees their right to free speech certainly deserves better from them and from all Americans.

Every person, particularly a fallen warrior, deserves the dignity of a peaceful funeral at their passing. Whatever happen to the wisdom of Lincoln? “With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow; and his orphan – to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves and with all nations.”

Gratefully in this world of opposites, there are those who oppose these hateful forces, who have dedicated and who are continuing to dedicate their lives, to truth, honor and freedom. These men and women were and are known as PATRIOTS and many of them have joined forces as the Patriot Guard Riders. They remember, “The only thing it takes for evil to triumph is for good men [women] to do nothing.” and have decided to take a stand between our fallen warriors and the Westboro Baptist Church.

In the last session of the Supreme Court, the church won an opinion based upon what they were doing was “protected speech” as it was not directed specifically at the fallen warrior. You can read the opinion at http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/10pdf/09-751.pdf.

How far we have drifted from the respect shown to fallen warriors when I was a small boy in Pennsylvania. I hope for the sake of my grandchildren and great-grandchildren this nation soon returns to the values of my youth. Then God – Family – Country meant something. Today they seem to mean very little to most Americans.
