Honesty a Value That Matters
By William J. Dell – January 1993
This is a time of new beginnings. We stand on the threshold of a new year as well as new administrations in both our nation and state. Great opportunities await both our elected officials and ourselves. It is their great opportunity to serve “We the People”. It is “We the People’s” opportunity and our duty to support them when their position conforms to the following two guidelines: 1. It is just and right when weighed in the balance of God; and, 2. It conform to our divinely inspired Constitution.
Admiral William “Bull” Halsey once said, “There are no great men. There are only great tasks and ordinary men to meet them”. “We the People”, as citizens, have a responsibility to observe if these men and women, who have been elected, will achieve greatness by performing the great tasks that confront us as a state and a nation.
President Clinton has summoned up the principles of Jefferson and Lincoln as benchmarks for his administration. Jefferson who quietly espoused “right to life, liberty, and property” and “Honest” Abe, who zealously labored for the preservation of the Union and “liberty for all”.
Already, there seems to be some question. It seems, at least on the surface, that we are destined for politics as usual. They, our elected officials, still haven’t got it. They still don’t understand that “We the People” want change. That “We the People” what them to be honest with us. They still don’t understand that “We the People” what to live in a Christian nation with the constitutional principles given us by our Founding Fathers.
A careful reading of the Ten Commandments reveals the value Heavenly Father places on honesty. Each of the last four commandments relates in some way to honesty. Thou shalt not commit adultery; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shalt not bear false witness; and, Thou shalt not covet. Yet, in our present day, an honest individual, particularly in politics, seem very difficult to find. What has happened in our society that we are so willing to take advantage of our spouses, children, neighbors and employers by our lack of integrity and dishonesty? “We the People” need to adopt this God given standard as our benchmark. Then, “We the People” need to demand that our elected officials apply it in the affairs of state.
We, as a nation, have significant problems confronting us. The Four Trillion Dollar deficit, affordable health care, and education all present challenges larger than any one individual. Each of us share a portion of the problem and the solution. Because of this honesty is an absolute must. “We the People” can handle the truth.
It is my prayer that our elected officials do get it before it is to late. They need to remember that PAC money may have financed the campaign, but it was still “We the People’s” votes that won the election. They need to be honest and realize that “We the People” are the employer and they are the employee. They then need to solve the employer’s problems without regard to the special interest groups because that is what they were elected to do.
