The Conscience of a Patriarch
By William J. Dell – July 1992
In this third issue of The Patriarchal Advocate, I thought that I would pause and explain why this effort has been undertaken. Each of you must remember however that this effort although thought out is still evolving. I hope and pray that each of you will have patience with my imperfections.
As each of you know, I have a profound love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and this great nation of which we are citizens. Many of you are aware that I believe that this nation did not rise of itself. Many of you share my belief that God had His hand in its birth and success over our 216 year national history. Many of you know, as I do, that the Founding Fathers were raised up to establish our Constitution and this great Christian nation. Many of you also share my concern that the great principles that are the foundation of this nation are being chipped away at by evil and designing persons who seek only their selfish purposes regardless of the effect on others.
My dear friend and patriot, Jim English, Johanne’s dad, taught me many things. One of these was, “Will, no where in all of Holy Writ have I ever read that I can stop being their father.” I share his testimony. As you, our daughters, leave the nest and travel to distant and not so distant places, I still believe that I have a responsibility to provide guidance to you and my posterity. I believe that whereever you are, I still have a responsibility from our Father in Heaven to teach you and help you develop a deep and abiding:
1. Love for and faith in God and His Son, Jesus Christ.
2. Love for strong family ties where by we may help each other withstand the trials and adversities of these days and times together.
3. Love and appreciation for the great principles upon which this nation was built.
For thirty years forces have been striving to destroy the moral fiber of this nation by trying to de-christianize it. At the same time they have led the battle to destroy the family and the values that made families strong and self-reliant. Some of you however probably are not aware that this fight is the same one that has been waged from before the foundations of the earth. It is the war of FREEDOM vs. SLAVERY which began in the pre-existence. In that first battle, the forces of Christ were triumphant over Satan’s forces and a third of the hosts of heaven were lost.
We, all of us, were there. We, all of us, were on the winning side. Consequently, we, all of us, were given the opportunity to be born into this life, to gain a body, and to see if we would keep the commandments of God. We, all of us, were told that in this journey we call life that there would be many more battles for our hearts and minds. We, all of us, were told that Satan would continually strive to enslave us all and ‘lead us carefully down to hell’. We, all of us, were also taught that if we were faithful to the commandments of God that we would be able to overcome Satan and maintain our freedom and return to God, the Father of us all.
You will recall that the Children of Israel forsook God and worshipped the golden calf. Because of this they were required to wander in the Wilderness of Sin for forty years and only Joshua was permitted to enter the Promised Land. During that time they raised a righteous generation who were worthy of the blessings and promises of God that they had lost. This nation and people also forsook God in the sixties to follow after the gods of money, sex, drugs, selfishness, and self-indulgence, forgetting their Christian heritage and the principles upon which our great nation was founded. Because of this we, as a nation, have been wandering in an amoral wilderness. As we have wandered, some of us have continued to strive to raise a righteous generation worthy to inherit the God given blessings of freedom contained in our Constitution and that our Founding Fathers fought for and gave us in our Christian nation. We, as a nation, however have not won many battles lately. The forces of Satan are strong and ‘when the wicked rule the people mourn’.
I firmly believe that if we are to save ourselves, our families, and our great nation that we must raise a generation of Christian, Patriotic children. To this end, I have undertaken to write to my posterity and friends The Patriarchal Advocate devoted to God, Family and Country. I do not do this because I feel that I am better or wiser than anyone else. I only undertake this effort in an humble attempt to provide such guidance as the Lord will grant me to those under my charge or who may read these pages. I leave to each reader the privilege of accepting or rejecting the counsel given.
I also firmly believe that if we are to be successful in this fight, we, as parents, must first with God’s help save our own family. After this by precept and example, we with God’s help can come together as families to save our communities and finally our nation. The key however to restoring our nation to its Christian heritage is in the struggle of each father and mother to raise a righteous family. This is because families come together to form nations; nations are not divided into families. May God bless us, our families and our nation in our struggle to reclaim the hearts of all who would be free.
