The Deficit Round Two Tax and Spend

By William J. Dell – March 1993

Early morning, 19 March, in the House of Representatives the vote was taken for politics as usual. Our elected representatives ignoring the will of the people, passed Presidents Clinton’s economic plan. This plan includes a promise of $510 Billion in deficit reduction over five years and $18 Billion in economic stimulus this year.

What is not told on the surface is that over half of the $510 Billion in deficit reduction is in the form of new taxes with just over $200 Billion in the form of spending cuts. The ratio is approximately 90 cents in spending cuts for each dollar of new taxes. They couldn’t even get us a 1 to 1 ratio. Of course this is much better than last months up to 1 to 14 projections coming out of Washington. The sad part about it is they are still up to their “SMOKE and MIRRORS”. No one is willing to state that there will be deficit reduction in 1993 because it isn’t going to happen folks. Deficit U.S.A. will continue to climb this year.

The President says he wants specific spending cuts from those of us who would cut the budget further. He says he will look at them. Well, I suggest that each of you obtain the following book by Martin L. Gross, THE GOVERNMENT RACKET WASHINGTON WASTE FROM A TO Z, Bantam Books, 1992, ISBN 0-553-37175-4. It runs $7.99 in paper back. After you read the book with its $400 Billion in specific spending cuts, you can write your Congressman and the President and let them know if you agree or not. Oh, by the way, be sure and read the list of acknowledgements in the front of the book. Mr. Gross uses the governments own figures from their own “bean counters” to obtain his information.

Anyway we as a nation seemed doomed to repeat history because we cannot learn from it. We are once again dropping into a “tax and spend” effort to get us out of fiscal ruin. This is the same plan that brought us double digit inflation in the past and it will happen again probably not this year, but it is coming.

The Congress tells us that we are not heavily taxed as a people when compared to the other peoples of the world. This is true. I have been in some of those heavily taxed nations. Even our “Misery Index” of the eighties pales in comparison to theirs. I would think that the Congress could find a better model to follow. Some of these nation have triple digit inflation.

The strength of this nation has always been smaller involvement by government in the lives of the people. As government has gotten bigger, the people have been less free to use their means in the fashion that made our nation the greatest nation in the world. We need to remember our heritage and reduce the size of government and its intrusion into our lives.

We as a people need to become more informed and more involved in the effort to reduce Deficit U.S.A. If we don’t our children and grandchildren will live in a vastly different nation than we have. They will never know “The American Dream” because we will have let it die. We will have enslaved them with the chains of debt.
Our chains are already heavy. Our chains are already burdensome. If we fail in our efforts to remove them they will be many times heavier and harder to remove by our posterity. If you love your family and your nation, you must join in the fight to reduce the deficit and return the hope of “The American Dream” to our posterity. You must join in the fight to remove all waste in our government before taxes are raised. You must join in the fight against Congress’ empty promises of spending cuts and for the Balanced Budget Amendment and the Line Item Veto. And remember in this cause, YOU are either an economic Freedom Fighter or a fighter of economic freedom.

To maintain the American way of life and pass it intact to succeeding generations is the responsibility of every true American.
