The Law of Choice and Accountability

By William J. Dell – September 1992

I would first like to say that each of us were granted the God given gift of Moral Agency in the pre-existence. This is basically the right of choice. It must be remembered however that God gave us this right to see if we would keep the commandments of God during our mortal probation. We have the absolute right to chose; however, we cannot escape forever the consequences of our choices. God has said that there will be a day of accountability for our actions.

Let me illustrate. You have the power to chose to arm yourself and rob a bank. If in the course of the robbery you discharge the weapon, either on purpose or accidentally, and someone dies, you suffer the consequences of being a murderer. You may not have wanted it to happen, but you chose to take the weapon with you on the robbery. You will be held accountable for your actions by this nation when apprehended and ultimately by God. This is in accordance with the eternal law of Choice and Accountability.

Currently in our nation there is a great debate being waged concerning Pro-choice v. Pro-life. In this debate the Pro-Choice advocates would have us believe that being Pro-choice does not mean that you are pro abortion. Regardless of this rhetoric they in fact are seeking the absolute right of a woman to have an abortion on demand.

It must be recognized however that abortion is one of the most revolting and sinful practices of our day. The only justification for its practice by a Christian nation is in those rare cases where, in the judgement of competent medical counsel, the life and health of the woman is in jeopardy or the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape. Even then, the woman should consider an abortion only after counseling with her husband or parents, her minister or priest and prayer. This is because a life will be lost and all life is a gift from God.

In the case where a woman and a man exercise their CHOICE to use their procreative powers inconsistent with the Laws of God, they must realize that they may have to suffer the consequences of their actions. They may develop a STD, such as AIDS, or she may become pregnant. This is the risk she and her partner takes by exercising their CHOICE outside the fidelity of marriage and according to God’s Laws.

The Pro-CHOICE Advocates then believe that they should still have the right of CHOICE to avoid ACCOUNTABILITY. In exercising this second CHOICE, they are only selfishly trying to escape the consequences of their previous CHOICE of using their God given procreative abilities inconsistent with His guidelines. This second CHOICE is often at the expense of their unborn child in the form of an abortion. This use of abortion as a means of birth control is completely against the Laws of God and any one who uses it as such will ultimately receive ACCOUNTABILITY from Him for their actions.

The Pro-CHOICE Advocates say, “It’s my body. I should be allowed to do with it as I feel.” The problem with this thinking is that although you had the CHOICE in the first instance after you are pregnant three individuals are involved. All three of these persons, the woman, the man, and the child, have rights under the Laws of God. After conception neither the woman nor the man have the right of unilateral action with regard to their child. Although the woman is carrying the child, it is as much the man’s child as her’s. After all, she did not get pregnant without the man.

The Pro-Choicers must, at some point, come to the realization of the truths that the Pro-Lifers understand. These truths are concerning God’s Eternal Law of Choice and Accountability and His Law of Love.

Concerning the Law of Choice and Accountability, we have always been taught that good ends cannot be sanctified by evil means. It is beyond me how the Pro-Choicers can rationalize the loss of life of an unborn child as a good end. If the mother’s life was in danger and she had other children to raise, preserving her life for the good of the other children would make some sense. On the other hand to destroy this life because it is “inconvenient” or “unwanted” is a gross violation of sacred principles.

We also have been taught that two wrongs never make a right. The Pro-Choicers are violating this principle by their desire to avoid accountability through abortion for their CHOICE to use their procreative abilities in an inconsistent manner to Divine guidelines. In this I know they will fail for they will at some later time be accountable to God who gave the gift of life to the unborn child.

Concerning God’s Eternal Law of Love as taught by the Savior in the First and Second Great Commandments: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy should, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (see Matt. 22:34-40)

What closer “neighbor” do we have then the child formed by what is supposed to be an act of love? How can we say we love God and wantonly destroy life in any form? This is particularly true when the life is a defenseless child. How can we say we love ourselves when we have no respect for the life within us or for which we are responsible however new it is. Lastly and finally, how can Pro-Choicers say they love God, who gave them life, when they destroy the gift of life for which they are responsible.
