To Vote or Not to Vote That Is the ?

By William J. Dell – October 1992

We in this nation enjoy, because of the sacrifice of many, a republican form of government. This government is representative by nature and convenience. After all can you imagine a “town meeting” of over two hundred million people.

The Lord and our Founding Fathers have cautioned us to choose wise men and good men to be our representatives and leaders. Our Divinely inspired constitution dictates an election process to this end. Yet less than half of the eligible voters of this nation vote. Why do we have this great apathy?

For many of the past years I have been involved in trying to get people to vote. As I have talked to people during every election period, I have run into those who profess to be patriots and citizens but who say, “I’m not going to vote this year. There just isn’t anyone to vote for and besides my vote doesn’t mean anything anyway.”

This patriot and citizen finds this attitude appalling. I just have great difficulty understanding, when more than two million men have fought and died that this right might be protected and preserved, why anyone would disenfranchise themselves.

This nation has twice been redeemed by the shedding of blood. The first was to establish our Union. The second was to preserve our Union. Unless we as citizens get involved in our political process, we will continue to see our rights and freedoms eroded. Unless we as citizens practice responsible citizenship at the ballot box, we acquiesce in being fettered by the chains of slavery and risk having to redeem the land once again.

It is time for every freedom loving American to get involved in the political process. It is time for every responsible citizen to investigate and study the issues and candidates. In this effort only one question need be considered: Does the issue or candidate’s position preserve individual freedom as guaranteed by our divinely inspired constitution? If it does the issue and candidate deserve our vote. If it does not, the issue and candidate should be rejected.

This writer acknowledges that it is doubtful that we can agree with a candidate’s position on every issue. It is therefore important that we study well enough to make the best choices for the preservation of our freedom and liberty. Then as a freedom loving American, we will vote for the candidate of our choice.
