03. Understanding the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution

Amore Dei, Familiae, Patriae ducit !

Let each of us, personally, read or reread, the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution. How can we, personally, understand our heritage if we know nothing of these great documents which I believe were inspired by our Creator? How can we defend the principles which they contained if we have no personal knowledge of those principles? Then having read them let us give copies to our children and grandchildren, who are old enough to read and understand them, urging them to follow our example. Small booklet size copies can be obtained from the Heritage Foundation and many other conservative websites.

Let each of us understand the principles of “Separation of Powers,” both Horizontal and Vertical. These principles are based upon our Judeo-Christian heritage and on Anglo-Saxon Law.

Our Horizontal Separation of Powers comes from Isaiah 33:22 (KJV), “For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.” It was from this that the Founding Fathers obtained the vision to divide the government into the Judiciary, Legislature and Executive.

Our Vertical separation of Powers or the division of responsibility between the Federal, State, County, Municipality and the Family is also based upon an incident in the Bible as implemented in Anglo-Saxon Law. In Anglo-Saxon Law a “Ward” was six miles square. Within the Ward was a “Hundred Man” and “Vil Man” and a “Tithing Man.” These were responsible for 100, 50 and 10 Families respectively. All of this based upon the counsel Moses received from this father-in-law, Jethro, for governance of the Children of Israel as they exited Egypt (see Exodus 18:13-26).

Let each of us understand the purposes of our federal government as granted by We the People and contained in the Preamble to the Constitution:

We the People of the United States,

in Order to form a more perfect Union,
establish Justice,
insure domestic Tranquility,
provide for the common defense,
promote the general Welfare, and
secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,

do ordain and establish this constitution of the United States of America.

The first of these was accomplished when the Constitution was ratified replacing the Articles of Confederation. The remaining five are an on-going effort, and the only responsibilities of the federal government. Anything else is reserved to the several States or to We the People by the Tenth Amendment of the Bill of Rights. In that regard a word about “provide” and “promote.” It is obvious that the Founding Fathers had two different views concerning “the common defense” and “the general Welfare” or they would have used the same word to described the action expected by We the People of our federal government. To “provide” is to do. To “promote” is to encourage. This is why the Progressives, of both parties, efforts to “provide” rather than “promote” the general welfare are in all cases unconstitutional.

With this knowledge let each of us, personally, weigh the issues of our day in the light and truth of these principles. Let each of us measure the issues of our Constitutional Republic today against the Scriptures, our founding documents and the words of our Founding Fathers just as our forefathers did. For example, the Old Testament tells of the foolish act of Esau, brother of Jacob, who sold his birthright for a “mess of pottage.” This is surely a lesson for We the People that a free meal is NOT worth an inheritance of tyranny in exchange for our God given rights to Life, Liberty and Property. We the People cannot permit those of the Progressive Movement to destroy our unalienable rights from God to Life, Liberty and Property; and, the principles of self-reliance and self-determination which have made our Constitutional Republic great! Principles which were and which continue to be purchased by the blood of patriots.
